The Muriel family were a medical family who lived in Ely for nearly 200 years. George, the eldest son of Rev John Muriel, rector of Chatteris, arriving in the city circa 1750, having adopted the medical profession. He purchased a house on Market Place, which remained in the family until 1929, and was soon joined by his brother, Robert, who trained as a Surgeon in London. Robert's eldest son, Robert (1762-1828), Surgeon, expanded the family practice purchasing a large residence in the High St, one of his sons, John Muriel (1799-1884) FRCS, a well known and highly regarded Surgeon, would purchase and reside at the large house on the green "Chantry House". At least 50 members of the family were born and raised in Ely. Their descendants would include the authors; Daphne du Maurier and Simon Dewes (John Muriel).
