History

Robert Muriell was an Alderman of Cambridge and Mayor of Cambridge 1676. He also occupied a position as Chief Manciple of Trinity College Cambridge and Captain of the Trained Band (local army).

The Biography Notes for Mayors of Cambridge by J Milner -Gray “ He was an Alderman in 1662 and Captain of trained bands. He was a justice of the Peace for the Town and served on the Subsidy Commissions of 1678 and 1679. He died September 2nd 1682. During his Mayoralty he presented a rose water dish to the Corporation, which was sold in 1836”

Charles Muriel Bidwell founded the surveyors Bidwells. His son Charles Bidwell remained in Ely, but successfully expanded the business.

Charles Muriel Bidewell's granddaughter was the actress Muriel Beaumont, the mother of famed author Daphne du Maurier
