History

Robert Muriell was an Alderman of Cambridge and Mayor of Cambridge 1676. He also occupied a position as Chief Manciple of Trinity College Cambridge and Captain of the Trained Band (local army).

The Biography Notes for Mayors of Cambridge by J Milner -Gray “ He was an Alderman in 1662 and Captain of trained bands. He was a justice of the Peace for the Town and served on the Subsidy Commissions of 1678 and 1679. He died September 2nd 1682. During his Mayoralty he presented a rose water dish to the Corporation, which was sold in 1836”

3) The will of Thomas Muriell of 1657 of Trinity Cambridge names his cousins as Robert Muriell gent. of Cambridge and Thomas Muriell of Cambridge

4) Diary of Samuel Newton, which can be read online, gives several references to Robert Muriell, including the time of his death at 3.30pm on 2nd September 1682. The diary confirms Robert’s position as Alderman and Mayor 1676 also his links to Trinity College.

6) Cambridge Alumini provides information of two of Robert’s children Henry Muriell and George Muriel (note the spelling of the surname varies around this time) but both entries confirm Robert as their father and his position.
