History

Occupation : Lieutenant - Colonel 8th Bengal Native Infantry. At the time of his death George had been transferred to the 14th BNI

1803 Enrolled as a Cadet

02/05/1816 Departure from Madras to England onboard the ship Princess Charlotte of Wales. 8th Regiment NI Lieutenant

18/08/1819 Arrival Madras from London onboard the ship Surry (Surrey ?). Lieutenant

11/05/1831 Arrival Madras from London onboard the ship Thames. Major

1832 - “During the Vishakhapatnum campaign the Governor in Council provided for Major George Muriel in this way” - “ In April 1832 the Governor in Council Transferred Major Muriels commander from the 8th BNI ti 47th BNI” thus allowing Major Muriel to command the 8th BNI

“General Taylor privately called the governors attention to Major Muriel as an officer worthy of encouragement” When a lieutenant-colonel died at sea Major Muriel was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.

George Muriel wrote a will on the 31st January 1834. He left the management of his estate and the guardianship of his two children to his brothers William and John and brother in law Samuel Beddome, his estate to provide for the education and profession of his children. If his two children died before the age of 23 the estate was to be divided between his sister Mary and brother William for their own personal use. One of the items that George requests to be returned to England on his death was a watch with miniature pictures of both his father and his son.

1. Monument in Ely Cathedral.
2. Georgiana in the 1851 census lived with Hinton family who like the Muriels were Surgeons by profession. She married Broadley Wilson Hinton and they emigrated to Australia.
